1. MedInfo2010  

MEDINFO 2010 - 13th World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics; 12 to 15 September 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa (250 days to go).

a] Early bird registration deadline

Early bird registration has been extended to 28 February 2010 - this is after you should have heard about acceptance of submitted papers, etc. The site for conference registration and accommodation booking payment is open - via the main MedInfo 2010 website (www.medinfo2010.org), or directly athttps://events.confco.co.za/ei/cm.esp?id=126&pageid=_2OO0LACU8


2. IMIA Award of Excellence - nominations invited


At the Medinfo2001 London General Assembly, the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA) approved the establishment of a Medical Informatics Award of Excellence. The Award of Excellence is given every three years in conjunction with Medinfo. The criteria for a potential recipient of the Medical Informatics Award of Excellence are:

 ?an individual whose personal commitment and dedication to medical informatics has made a lasting contribution to medicine and healthcare through her or his achievements in research, education, development or application in the field of medical informatics.?

The first award was given at MedInfo2004 in San Francisco to Dr. François Grémy. The recipient the second award, made at Medinfo2007 in Brisbane, was Dr. Jan H. van Bemmel.

We are now seeking nominations for the third IMIA Award of Excellence, to be presented at Medinfo 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa. In addition to the Award, the recipient will be invited to give a plenary lecture at Medinfo2010, and will receive support including airfare, accommodation and expenses.

You are invited to submit your nomination, with supporting details, to the IMIA Executive Director by February 28, 2010 at imia@imia-services.org 


3. Forthcoming events
   
Due to the increasing number of events we are asked to publicise, we will only here mention those in 2010. Notices of these events, as well as events in 2011 and beyond, will be added to the IMIA website and IMIA news website when they are announced or when there is significant new information.

a] IMIA Working Group and Special Interest Group activities

The IMIA Health Information Systems Working Group (IMIA HIS WG) will be organising a two day workshop on Health Information Systems ? 30 Years of Evolution, that will take place on September 10-12, 2010 in Stellenbosch, South Africa, just before the Medinfo 2010 Conference in Cape Town, South Africa. Further details will be advised in due course.

b] Regional events

The 2010 Special Topic Conference (STC) of the European Federation for Medical Informatics (EFMI) will take place in Reykjavík, Iceland on June 2-4, 2010. 4. 2010 dates for Board and GA members

The early 2010 IMIA Board meeting (Board members only) will be held on May 29, 2010 in Vancouver BC, Canada. Precise details will be communicated to Board members early in 2010.

The 2010 Board and General Assembly meetings will be held in conjunction with Medinfo2010 in Cape Town, South Africa. The Board will meet on 11 September and the General Assembly on 12 September.

2011 General Assembly meeting, advance notice: - at the kind invitation of the hosts of MIE2011, the 2011 Board and General Assembly meetings will be held in Oslo, Norway. Precise dates will be advised. MIE2011 (www.mie2011.org) will be held on 28-31 August.


5. MEAHI - new IMIA region

A new IMIA regional group was formally approved by the IMIA General Assembly in Hiroshima, Japan. MEAHI ? the Middle East Association for Health Informatics ? has been established after much hard work, in particular by Prof. Hiroshi Takeda, IMIA?s VP for Special Affairs and Dr Ramin Moghaddam (President of the Iranian Medical Informatics Association ? IrMIA).

MEAHI will advance and advocate the use of information and  communication technologies at every level in the delivery of healthcare and medical services in the Middle East region, especially in the countries in which the WHO regional office for the Eastern Mediterranean (WHO-EMRO). The new MEAHI region will be formally welcomed at a ceremony at Medinfo2010. Dr Ramin Moghaddam was approved as the first president of MEAHI, and will be its regional representative to the IMIA Board.

All members in the new region are encouraged to contact Dr Moghaddam for further information - Dr_Moghaddam@Medical-Informatics.Net


6. IMIA Executive Director and Office bids, 2011-2016


IMIA President Prof. Reinhold Haux announces that, as per the decision of the IMIA General Assembly 2009, bids will be invited for the position of IMIA Executive Director for the period 2011-2016. Bids should contain concept proposals for the development of the IMIA Office. Details of the bid process and requirements, including closing date and further details, will be provided in the February 2010 IMIA monthly news bulletin.


7. Revised IMIA Recommendations on  Education

The revised IMIA Recommendations on  Education in Biomedical and Health Informatics Education have been endorsed by the IMIA General Assembly. They are in the final stages of preparation, and will appear in Methods of Information in Medicine later in January 2010. A news item will be posted on the IMIA News website when they are available for free download, and giving details of their use and requirements around reprinting.


8. Please ensure website details are correct

Could all IMIA members and representatives check their details, and those of their organisations, on the IMIA website. If any updates are needed, please email them to imia@imia-services.org

Thank you to all member organisations who have been paying their membership fee invoices in recent weeks. We would like to encourage those who have still to pay to settle their 2008 and 2009 accounts as soon as possible. Please send payment as per instructions on the invoices to avoid delay.


9. February 2010 bulletin

The February 2010 bulletin will be published on 01 February; the March bulletin will be after HIMSS10, on approx. 08 March. We welcome all feedback (toimia@imia-services.org) and any news items, conferences, etc for the websites.
